Jordan Family Reunion - Day 3: Afternoon Fellowship
Jordan Family Reunion - Day 3
Morning Worship Service:
Flint River Primitive Baptist Church,
357 Everett Road
Huntsville, AL 35811.
Elder R. L. Payton, Pastor
The Order of Service was presided over by Rev. Dr. Ernest Tanner which included a Processional by the Jordan Family Reunion Choir, Devotion lead by Brother Chester Woodard and Brother George Woodard III, Scripture by Brother Clifford Steger, Introduction of Speaker by Rev. James T. Steger, Selections by the Jordan Family Reunion Choir, and Presentations to Jordan Family Reunion Organizers.
The Speaker of the Hour was Rev. Dr. C. Don Steger, Pastor of Reeder Memorial Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC. He tied his message of the day with Luke 15:11-18. He urged us as family to realize our connection is not only with each other. Our connection ties us together as the off-springs of Paul and Flora. He reminded us that it is easy to lose the connection when we are young and reckless and that there is a need on the part of youth to separate themselves. He stated that worldly distractions are very inviting and that there is nothing wrong with discovering all that surrounds us... the wonders God has created. There are times when we are out searching and get lost... this causes us to break the connection... get shaped with what the world wants us to be rather than what "Mom and Dad" wanted us to be. We should remember to reflect back on Paul and Flora - two ex-slaves determined that their children would be educated.
When we break the tie, we cut loose from the anchor that bonds us together. We get lost and don't know who we are. When we are one in trillions of people, how do we identify who we are? The excitement is in finding the anchor in where we come from... who we are. When we come together we connect with roots we didn't even know we had. We are connected as the family of God. We are tied to something bigger. If we are not anchored in Jesus we lose our fruitfulness. We can be famous today but unknown tomorrow. Our life is in the connection.
The greatest value God tells us to keep is to stay connected to Him and stay connected to our neighbor... everything else is based on this. We have no identity outside of the connection. We are to encourage our children... they cannot achieve without knowing where they come from. Everything starts with a foundation. Get back with the connection that starts with the foundation. When we get too far from our connections we find ourselves considering things we should not. We will eventually come to a point when nobody wants to be bothered with us. When we get to that point, we don't have to stay there. God is not interested in how we messed up. His objective is to get us back to the connection... to be born again and come home to the connection.
Paul and Flora and all of their children are why we are here. When we decide to reconnect, the door will be open. All we've got to do is come home. Someone has gone before us and paved the way to stand between us and the connection to plead for us. Our fathers and ancestors are ready to rejoice when we come home.
